ESD table and shelf coverings - What role do ESD table and shelf coverings play?

ESD table coverings and ESD shelf coverings are part of the standard-compliant ESD protection concept in accordance with IEC 61340-5-1. They serve to dissipate electrostatic charges in a controlled manner and thus minimise the risk of uncontrolled discharges that can irreversibly damage ESD-sensitive electronic components.

What characterises the ESD table coverings?

The ESD table covering forms the primary dissipative surface in the direct working area within the EPA (ESD zone). It ensures that charges generated by operating personnel or component movements are safely dissipated via an EPA-compliant earthing system. Specified discharge resistances must be observed - typically in the range of 10⁶ to 10⁹ ohms.

Purpose:

Prevention of uncontrolled electrostatic discharges on the work surface
Protection of components and assemblies during machining, assembly or testing

Function:

Conductive or dissipative material with defined surface resistance dissipates charge in a controlled manner via earthing

The three-layer premium ESD table coverings consist of an upper, permanently dissipative vinyl layer and a centre conductive layer. Thanks to the third layer of dissipative foam, the covering is suitable for impact-sensitive components and is non-slip.

What characterises the ESD shelving?

ESD shelf coverings fulfil an important function in the warehouse and logistics area within an ESD zone (EPA) to prevent electrostatic discharge. They enable the controlled discharge of electrostatic charges to an earthed potential. In combination with standard-compliant earthing of the shelving system, they protect sensitive electronic components from ESD damage during storage and internal material flow.

Purpose:

Protection against ESD damage when storing sensitive components, assemblies or devices
Prevention of charging through friction
Prevention of a hard discharge against metallic surfaces

Function:

Dissipative and volume conductive material prevents electrostatic charging through friction (tribocharging)

The volume-conductive ESD shelf covering made of wear-resistant synthetic rubber is suitable for shelving and storage areas. The two-layer covering is abrasion-resistant, permanently elastic, halogen-free and resistant to solder and heat. It can be laid loose or, if required, fixed with adhesive or fabric tape. The flooring is available in rolls or cut to size.
